What Does an HVAC Technician Do?

HVAC technicians are highly trained professionals who install, repair, and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and cooling systems that control air quality and temperature in residential and commercial buildings. It is possible to become an HVAC service technician without a degree, but it is not the ideal path. HVAC technicians work to install, maintain, repair, or replace air conditioners, climate control systems, heating equipment, ventilation units, cooling equipment, and more. When choosing a contractor or HVAC company, it is important to remember that they differ in their areas of expertise.

While most HVAC contractors and companies are trained in heating, ventilation and air conditioning, some technicians specialize in one of these areas. In addition to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and sometimes cooling, HVAC contractors can offer a duct cleaning service. There are several local associations (such as Air Conditioning Contractors of America or Associated Builders and Contractors) that offer HVAC learning programs. HVAC technicians respond to customer calls, identify problems or faults in HVAC equipment, and resolve common HVAC problems.

Much of the work of HVAC contractors involves emergency repairs as problems with HVAC systems often arise suddenly and require urgent attention. Homeowners may need an HVAC contractor at some point for their heating, cooling and comfort needs. It is important to remember that installing an air conditioner or oven requires a lot of skill and may be better suited for an experienced HVAC contractor. HVAC technicians also work to improve the efficiency of HVAC systems and reduce the negative effects their operations have on the environment.

Certifications help make HVAC work environments safer but do not completely eliminate workplace setbacks. Commercial professionals and HVAC technicians work for contractors and companies that offer installation, maintenance and repair services. Students of an HVAC training program will learn the basics of the industry which will be invaluable during their apprenticeship.
